November 2020: Week 3
Edition #020 - Data recap of last week's big moves inside the Tech ETF landscape. See what to keep an eye on for the week ahead.
The first edition of Finlister Weekly was on July 13th of this year.
These were the top 5 Tech ETFs at the time, and their returns since then:
$ARKW 35%
$ARKK 33%
$CWEB 25%
$OGIG 24%
$WCLD 17%
$SPY 12%
All 5 were already up 55%+ YTD. It will be very interesting to see how long their runs can continue, especially if they are able to sustain this into next year.
Since 2017, just 5/1500+ ETFs have been in the top 10% of ETFs every year.
Weekly Changes (Overall):
Out of 101 Tech ETFs analyzed, the average Tech ETFs had a modest week with a rise of 1.19% compared to last weeks 0.41% gain.
The top 5 ETFs over the last week all had two ETFs with over $1b AUM ($ARKW wtih $1.8b and $ARKK with $6.1b), $PSJ (Invesco Dynamic Software) with $490m and two sub-$50m ETFs $XWEB ($29m) and $NERD ($31m).
All 5 had 50 or less holdings.
No doubt $ARKW and $ARKK saw positive weeks as their largest holdings $TSLA gained nearly 20% through the week as it is now scheduled for a Dec. 21 inclusion in the S&P 500 Index.
Weekly Changes ($1b+ AUM):
Out of 25 Tech ETFs which have over $1b in assets under management, the average Tech ETFs stayed positive with a 0.41% rise (compared to last weeks 0.71% rise).
$ARKK was the only ETF to stay in this group week to week.
While last week we saw more alternative tech and clean energy in the mix, this week skews slightly back towards the cloud with $SKYY, $IGV and $FXL or folding into the mix.
Weekly Changes (100+ Holdings):
For the 21 ETFs in this group with greater than 100 Holdings, the average return for the week was a similar 0.42% (compared to 0.28% last week).
The average ranking out of 101 for 100+ Holding ETFs is 54.5 with an average return of 29%.
The average ranking for <100 Holding ETFs is 45 with an average return of 39%.
Is this a case of being over diversified?
Year to Date Changes (Overall):
YTD, the 94 ETFs in this group is currently up 36.11%, above the $SPY 11.98%.
Only 4 of which are in negative territory
$ROKT: -2%

$UFO: -10%
$LEND: -29%
At the top end, 2 Tech ETFs are above 100% YTD.

$TAN (Invesco Solar ETF) 133%
$PBW (Invesco WilderHill Clean Energy) 130%
$QCLN (NASDAQ Clean Energy) 124%

See you next week,
Stuart
